The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday summoned the local Chief Executive Officer of international taxi-booking service Uber over the alleged rape of a 27-year-old woman by one of its drivers on Friday.

"I have called the local CEO of the cab company today. We will try our best that this cab company is closed. Also, it needs to be investigated who brought this company to India and how it started," DCW chairperson Barkha Shukla said.

An FIR had been lodged earlier against Uber by the Delhi Police for cheating customers on the pretext of providing safe commuting with duly verified driver.

The Delhi Police will also reportedly continue questioning officials of the taxi service in Delhi.

The Delhi Government had on Monday banned Uber from functioning in the national capital even as the company issued a statement assuring its full co-operation to help the victim and her family in their recovery.

According to reports, the Uber cab driver accused of raping the finance executive on Friday, had been convicted for a similar crime in 2011 and had spent over seven months in prison. However, he was later granted bail.

Leaders of various political parties and social activists condemned this incident, calling for justice and better safety measures for women.
