Delhi's resident doctors go on indefinite strike

The resident doctors began an indefinite strike here on Monday demanding more rooms, cleaner environment, better salaries and working hours.

"Our demands are same as was during the strike in February. We are 1,500 resident doctors and there are only 150 rooms that too in bad shape. When we come after 36 hours of duty, we find that there is

leakage in our rooms. There are a lot of stray dogs and cats roaming everywhere. We don't have OTs here because of which there is a long waiting list. The patients suffer and then they blame us for all this.

There are times when the issue gets violent and the patients verbally abuse us. The security guards are old and are unable to manage them," said Pradeep Singh, the RDA present in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

"The medicines are not available and so the patients buy it from outside which is quite expensive. Everybody cannot afford this and we sometimes help them financially. The government must look into this issue. The residency scheme was updated in 1996 and it has not been updated since then. We work for 60 to 70 hours a week which is against the 48-hour rule set by the government," he added.

Singh demanded that the government must come up with a definite plan to resolve this issue.
