With the national capital facing a severe water crisis as the Jat unrest in Haryana shows no signs of subsiding, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that very soon water will have to be rationed and called for equal responsibility to be shared between the public and VIPs in the matter.
"Del facing unprecedented water crisis. Soon, water will have to be rationed. Shudn't scarcity be equally shared betn public n VIPs?," Kejriwal tweeted.
He added that the state government had been pursuing with Haryana and the Central governments to seek aid from the Army to open Munak canal,which supplies water to the national capital.
"Pray something happens soon," he added.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting is underway at Kejriwal's residence in which Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Water Minister Kapil Mishra, the Jal Board CEO and NDMC Secretary will be present.
Sisodia, who spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday over the issue, said that Delhiites would have to conserve water since there was nothing to supply after 48 hours.
"Just had emergency meeting with HM to update him that if nothing is done immediately, water supply in Delhi would face an unmanageable crisis," Sisodia tweeted.
Sunday morning's water supply will be available at low pressure as only 60% of water is available for supply.
"There is a crisis situation in Delhi. Whatever store of water we had we will use that for the people. As of now, we have rationed yesterday's water. After tomorrow we will not be able to supply water," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told the media yesterday.
The supply sources of water feeding seven Water Treatment Plants have completely dried up and as a result all these plants had to be shut down.
The areas affected due to the closure of plants are West Delhi, North-West, Central, South and part of North Delhi.
"Against the total production of 820 Million Gallons per day (MGD) of potable water, only 240 MGD is being produced, because of the disruption of the supply source from Haryana. DJB's tanker fleet has been fully redirected to the water deficient areas. The situation at Wazirabad is being constantly monitored. In this emergent situation, the people of Delhi are requested to use water with the utmost care," a statement by the Delhi Jal Board said.
