Discussions on declassification of Netaji files going on for long, says Chacko

Congress leader P.C. Chacko on Friday said that discussions between the Centre and the West Bengal Government with regard to classifying or declassifying files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose have been going on for some time, and that is why secrecy had to be maintained.

"Netaji's files which were to be classified and declassified, discussion were going on for very long. These are the things decided by the state government or the Central government because these files were kept secret for certain reasons," Chacko told ANI.

Chacko said Netaji was a national hero and a national leader, and added that his name itself was a big asset to India. The Congress considered him in high esteem.

"Let the declassified files come out, let us not make any emotional kind of reaction on this issue," he added.

The West Bengal Government on Friday declassified 64 files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The files were handed to the family members first and also kept on display at the Police Museum in Kolkata.

Acknowledging that there was a long-standing demand for the declassification of the files on Bose, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced that her government would be declassifying 64 files related to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on September 18.
