Gerard Depardieu-starrer 'Welcome to New York' which focuses on former IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn's dramatic fall from power in the aftermath of sexual assault charges, will be released online after premiering at the Cannes Festival.

The 65-year-old economist was accused of sexually assaulting a New York hotel chambermaid Nafissatou Diallo, the Guardian reported.

The Abel Ferrara-directed film, which had failed to find funding in France and did not make it on to the official festival selections, will now bypass cinemas and DVD's to be released straight to the internet.

Depardieu didn't hide the fact that he does not like Strauss-Kahn, who's hopes of being a candidate in France's 2012 presidential election were broken after the claims emerged, but said that the film was a story of power, solitude and decadence.
