Asserting that the much-talked about bull-taming sport of Jallikattu needs to be regulated rather than banned, actor Kamal Haasan on Monday said that banning Jallikattu would clearly be a case of double-standard, as thousands of elephants go mad in Kerala every year in the name of culture.
Haasan went on to say that the mass protest demonstrated on Marina beach reflected the discontent among Tamils.
Kamal was briefing the media in Chennai on Tuesday, where he hoped that the state government and the police would clarify on allegations of cops committing arson during the violence that erupted on Monday in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu.
On Monday, the actor had tweeted a video, already viral on social media, that showed a man dressed in police uniform setting an auto-rickshaw on fire during the violence around the Jallikattu protests.
Meanwhile, the actor desisted from calls made by protesters to ban PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) that had strongly demanded for the ban on Jallikattu citing animal abuse.
"Don't ban something. This is a democracy. I say, regulate," the actor said.
The state assembly on Monday had passed an amendment bill to conduct Jallikattu without any obstruction, replacing an ordinance that was promulgated two days ago.
