In a paper released, Trump administration has indicated that the United States is not bound by the World Trade Organisation's rulings on trade disputes.
The stand taken by US is a big shift from the practice followed by previous presidents.
"Even if a WTO dispute settlement panel...rules against the United States, such a ruling does not automatically lead to a change in U.S. law or practice. The Trump administration will aggressively defend American sovereignty over matters of trade policy," CNN quoted the document, as saying.
Laying out many of Trump's trade plans in writing for the first time, the document said the Trump administration plans to strictly enforce U.S. trade laws, defend U.S. national sovereignty over trade policy, and use all possible leverage to open foreign markets to U.S. exports, the document said.
In recent decades, the 164 countries in the WTO, which includes China, have agreed to resolve disputes through WTO panels. The Obama administration filed cases in the WTO against China, which led to the U.S. slapping tariffs on Chinese steel last year.
The paper came from the office of the U.S. Trade Representative, a wing of the executive branch.
