Dozens of pilgrims were feared killed in a stampede at Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district on Sunday.
According to television reports, the incident took place when the pilgrims were crossing the Sindh river bridge to attend a religious ritual on the last day of Navaratra festival at Mandula Devi temple.
The stampede apparently occurred after police resorted to a mild lathicharge to control the crowd moving towards the temple, reports added.
Some of the devotees are feared to have fallen into the river.
Further details are awaited.
