Saudi Arab Muslims have taken to social networking sites, condemning the act of disrespect shown to Islam by a young woman Arab designer from northern Israel, who reportedly used verses from the Holy Quran to design a dress for her college.
In order to showcase designs created by students, a photograph of the dress with verses from Al Baqara (The Cow) Chapter was posted on the Facebook account of Israel's Shenkar College of Engineering and Design.
The picture of a model wearing the controversial dress was titled "Cat on a hot tin roof", Gulf News reported.
The dress triggered a social media furor as bloggers expressed strong disapproval of the act, calling it a deliberate attempt to insult Islam and demanded harshest punishment for the fashion student
Taking offense to the designer's work, an Arab blogger wrote that stringent action should be taken against the student and all those who contributed to the desecration of the Holy Quran.
Defending the designer, her family said that the work was purely for a college project and that they had no intention of insulting the Quran or the feelings of Muslims.
