South African Twenty20 captain Faf du Plessis has said that he must improve his form and become more consistent in international cricket before putting himself in consideration for the role of one-day captain for his team.

According to Sport24, the batsman has been tipped to become South Africa's next captain in the 50-over format, with current captain AB de Villiers seemingly struggling to handle his roles of ODI skipper, senior batsman and wicketkeeper.

However, Du Plessis insisted that he is not ready for the role yet, saying that his performances need to be better if he wants to be considered as ODI captain, adding that he is aware that he was under pressure to score runs in the recent Sri Lanka tour.

Although Du Plessis has managed only two half-centuries in 21 matches this year and is averaging only 27.62 in 42 ODI games, the report said that he ended the drought with a solid 85 in the last T20 on South Africa's tour of Sri Lanka last month and also led his team to an historic 2-1 series win in the T20s.

However, Du Plessis said that he loves captaining, adding value to the team, dealing with high pressure times and does not mind making tough decisions as befits a captain, adding that he even likes taking the flak of making decisions like bowling changes himself.

Du Plessis' next chance to impress in limited overs version will come in October and November when the Proteas play five ODIs and two Twenty20s against Pakistan in Dubai, and the report added that they also play two Tests there in October.
