The British Royal Family has announced that the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip, will stop carrying out his public engagements from autumn this year.
Earlier, it was reported that Queen Elizabeth had called an emergency meeting of the royal household that is expected to take place later today.
Prince Philip, who will turn 96 next month, would attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August, both individually and accompanying the Queen.
A statement from the Royal Household, quoted by The Independent, said that the Duke may still choose to attend "certain public events from time to time".
Prince Philip is Patron, President or a member of more than 780 organisations.
