Dutch Defence Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, claiming responsibility for the death of peacekeeping troops in Mali in 2016, resigned from her post on Tuesday.

Hennis has been under pressure following a report last week saying that her department was responsible for an incident during military training on June 6, 2016, when a mortar killed two soldiers and injured a third, the Anadolu Agency reported.

She announced that defense chief Gen. Tom Middendorp was also resigning over the report.

A report published by the Safety Board of the Netherlands' Interior Ministry has claimed that the Defence Ministry had ignored the safety and medical standards in Mali due to their strategic goals.
