Earthquake measuring 6.2 hits central Italy

A series of earthquake hit Central Italy in the early hours of Wednesday morning in which huge loss of life and property is feared.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Perugia province northeast of Rome. The epicentre of the quake was about six miles southeast of Norcia.

According to the Washington Times, following the earthquakes, the Italian mayor said that his town had been destroyed and that he feared major fatalities.

Multiple aftershocks were reported and at least two tracked by the USGS-one of 4.6 magnitude and another of 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale.
