President Pranab Mukherjee has written to the Governors of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim conveying condolences on loss of lives caused by the earthquake today.
"I am sad to learn about the loss of lives, injuries and damage to property caused by the earthquake today in many States," President Mukherjee said in his letters.
"My thoughts are with all those affected by this natural calamity. I understand rescue and relief operations are currently underway. I am sure the State Government and other agencies are taking necessary steps to provide all possible help to the bereaved families who have lost their near and dear ones," he added.
President Mukherjee further said, "Please convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish speedy recovery to the injured persons."
In the wake of the earthquake that struck Nepal today, a 24-hour 'Control Room' has been set up in South Block in the Ministry of External Affairs. The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Nepal has risen to 758, with 467 people killed in the capital Kathmandu.

The impact of the earthquake was felt in almost all northern states in India particularly in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and West Bengal.
As per the latest information, 34 deaths have been confirmed so far with 23 deaths in Bihar, eight in Uttar Pradesh and three in West Bengal.
