The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reportedly refused to give it's backing to an Indian Premier League (IPL)-style tournament for women as an Australian businessman wants to launch a Women's International Cricket League.

Shaun Martyn reportedly wants to launch a Women's International Cricket League (WICL) that could see leading players earn 23,500 pounds in just 12 days, but the International Cricket Council has not yet sanctioned the proposal and the ECB has dismissed the plan.

According to the BBC, ECB chairman Giles Clarke said that there is no support or interest for this proposed event, which is similar to the men's IPL, which is a Twenty20 competition that began in 2008 and has been held each spring since then.

The tournament, if it were carried forward, would reportedly bring together the best female players in the world to play in six company-owned teams during a 12-day event in Singapore.

Speaking ahead of the ECB's announcement, England women team captain Charlotte Edwards said that she would want to play, but only if the competition is officially approved, adding that it is a wonderful opportunity for top players.

Although the ECB might have dismissed the WICL, but it has backed the new ICC International Women's Championship, in which the top eight teams in the world rankings would rake part and their results would determine the qualification for the 2017 Women's World Cup, the report added.
