The Egyptian authorities have indefinitely suspended football league matches after a deadly riot claimed the lives of 22 people at a stadium in Cairo on Sunday.

The clash occurred on account of police firing tear gas at Zamalek supporters after they tried to enter the stadium forcefully for a match against city rivals ENPPI, the BBC reported.

However, the supporters have put the blame on the authorities for opening only a single gate to let the fans in, which subsequently led to a stampede.

Meanwhile, the authorities issued an arrest warrant against the White Knights, the leaders of the Zamalek supporters group, the report added.

Earlier, the league was suspended in 2012 after riot claimed the 74 lives in a riot at a game in Port Said.
