Thirteen Egyptian Coptic Christians have been freed in Libyan city of Sirte after they were seized by gunmen from residential compounds, said officials.

According to BBC, eyewitnesses in the northern city of Sirte said that Christians were taken by gunmen in the middle of the night.

However, one tribal leader said that they had been detained by smugglers and were not kidnapped.

It was the latest incident in a series of attacks on Egyptian Christians working in Libya.

Muftah Marzuq, head of the council of elders in the coastal city of Sirte said that the people were released after negotiating with the gunmen.
