Egyptian court hands death sentence to Morsi

An Egyptian court has reportedly handed death sentence to ousted President Mohammed Morsi and over 100 other people over a mass prison break in 2011.

Morsi is already serving a 20-year-long jail term for arresting and torturing protesters while in power, the BBC reported.

However, Egypt's religious authorities will give their opinion on the sentence before it is carried out.

Muslim Brotherhood supporters termed the charges imposed on him "farcical."

Morsi was overthrown in a military coup in July 2013 following mass street protests against his rule.

Since then, the government has banned Muslim Brotherhood and nabbed thousands of Morsi's supporters.
