At least eight people have been killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion rocked an under-construction building in Lahore's busy Defence Y block area.

"It was a bomb attack," the Dawn quoted Nayab Haider, a spokesman for the provincial Punjab government, as saying.

Punjab government authorities initially had claimed it to be generator blast.

Meanwhile, another blast has been reported near the Gulberg area.

The nature of the second blast is not known.

The first blast took place in a busy locality with many commercial offices and eateries.

Law enforcement personnel have cordoned off the market and a search operation is underway.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said that there was no reason to target the building as he was informed that the plaza was not inaugurated yet.

The two blasts comes after a recent wave of terror attacks in Pakistan had claimed more than 100 lives.
