Elephant enters village in Jharkhand, chased away

Villagers chased away an elephant that entered their village after separating from its herd in Dumka district, Jharkhand.

Forest Department officials were informed immediately and they visited the village in Dumka district to track the elephant.

A forest department official, Abhishek Kumar, said the animal did not cause any damage as it was old.

"We have no information about any damage. Our forest team is after it and they are tracking it. It is a tusker, it is old, as per the information we have, and it doesn't cause much damage to the people," said Kumar.

The villagers chased the animal away by shouting, bursting crackers and lighting torch.

"It came around 6 am. We together chased it away. We didn't let it enter the residential part of the village. There are 1500 to 2000 people reside in this village," said a villager, Akash Kumar.

Attacks by elephants have been frequent in eastern India, causing serious injuries and deaths to villagers living near forests.
