The reign of returning England head coach Peter Moores has begun successfully after his team defeated Scotland by 39 runs in a rain-blighted one-day international that was reduced to 20 overs a side.

Although the target was adjusted to 173 using the Duckworth-Lewis method but Scotland did not get close despite an impressive batting performance by Michael Leask, who smashed five sixes in a 16-ball 42.

According to News.com.au, captain Alastair Cook (44) and Ian Bell (50) shared an 83-run opening stand before a middle-order collapse saw England falter to 167-6 in northern Scotland after the start was delayed by more than five hours.

This was a warm-up for England ahead of a T20 international and five-match ODI series against touring Sri Lanka, starting May 20, the report added.
