Sweden's Ericsson has forecasted the number of smartphones to triple to 5.6 billion globally by 2019, overtaking the conventional handsets.

The world's largest telecoms hardware maker said that it expects smartphone traffic to grow tenfold in the next six years, and total mobile subscriptions are predicted to reach 9.3 billion, News24 reports.

The company claimed that the service providers are increasing high-speed networks to deal with the surge in the market.

Presently, smartphones make up some 55 percent of all cellphones sold, but represent only 25 to 30 percent of all mobile subscriptions.
