An Indonesian woman on Wednesday morning delivered a baby on-board a Jakarta-bound Etihad Airways flight.
As a result of the baby's birth, the Etihad flight EY 474 travelling from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta was diverted to Mumbai to attend to the woman passenger.
Etihad Airways' spokesperson said, "Today's Etihad Airways flight EY474 from Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Jakarta (CGK) diverted to Mumbai (BOM) in India due to a medical emergency on board. As a result of the diversion, the flight will be two hours delayed arriving into Jakarta. We regret any inconvenience caused."
Authorities from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) said that following the medical emergency, the flight was diverted to Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the woman was immediately taken to Seven Hills Hospital for further medical examination.
"The passenger delivered a female child about 40 minutes before landing at CSMIA. As soon as CSMIA staff was informed about the situation, a medical team was kept on standby which attended the passenger immediately post the aircraft landing. MIAL doctors provided necessary medical assistance to stabilise the situation. An ambulance was arranged and the passenger was shifted to Seven Hills for further medical intervention. The flight departed at 0942 hours," an MIAL spokesperson said.
