The European lawmakers have reportedly nominated Pakistani schoolgirl activist Malala Yousafzai and NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden for the bloc's top human rights prize.

The European Parliament said that the two activists were among seven nominees for this year's Sakharov prize and the finalist for the prestigious 65,000 dollars award will be chosen next month.

According to Fox News, 16-year-old Malala, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt last year on her way home from school, was jointly nominated by three caucuses, making her the likely front-runner.

Snowden, who revealed classified information about the alleged programmes of the US surveillance agencies, was nominated by the Greens, a smaller pro-environment group.

The Sakharov prize is considered the Europe's top rights award and its previous winners include Nobel Peace Prize laureates Aung San Suu Kyi and Nelson Mandela.
