The European Commission has approved Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia devices and services.

The decision comes after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission approved a seven billion dollars deal over the weekend.

According to PC world, the European Commission said it was granting approval for the deal because a combination of Nokia's handset and smartphone business with Microsoft would not harm competition.

The two companies announced plans for the acquisition in early September with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer calling it 'a bold step into the future" for his company, the report added.

Both companies expect the acquisition to close in early 2014.
