The European Parliament has voted in favour of splitting Google's search engine from the rest of its business as a resolution to complaints that the company favours its own services in search results.

According to the BBC, the landmark vote sends a clear message to European regulators to get tough on the net giant. However, politicians have no power to enforce a break-up.

U.S. and many trade bodies have criticized the resolution to split Google.

The Commission has not ordered the break-up of any company earlier, and many believe it is unlikely to do so now.

But politicians are desperate to find a solution to the long-running anti-competitive clash with Google.
