China's former security chief Zhou Yongkang has been arrested and expelled from the communist party following investigation for corruption.

According to the BBC, China's top prosecuting body, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said that it had opened an official probe against Zhou.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has carried out a huge campaign to weed out corruption among party and government officials.

Zhou was accused of multiple crimes involving "serious violations of party discipline", "disclosing party and state secrets", "committing adultery with several women" and "accepting large sums of bribes".

The Supreme People's Procuratorate announced Zhou's arrest late on Friday night.
