Former Formula One driver Gerhard Berger has been released from a hospital after breaking his arm in a skiing accident in Tyrol, Austria.

The discharge from hospital comes ten weeks after seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, the man who replaced him at Ferrari, was left fighting for his life following an off-piste crash.

According to The Mirror and the German daily Kronen Zeitung, Berger, who retired from the sport in 1997, was airlifted to St.Johann hospital last Thursday after tripping on a forest road while skiing in poor visibility conditions.

The 54-year-old is said to have crashed heavily, breaking the upper part of his arm, and was operated on during the weekend before being released yesterday.

A hospital spokesperson said he is on the road to recovery.

McLaren, for whom Berger raced for between 1990 and 1992, have tweeted their support for the Austrian.

His former on-track rival, Schumacher, however, remains in a grave condition in a Grenoble hospital after his December 29 accident.
