Former Formula One driver Justin Wilson has passed away after succumbing to injuries sustained in an IndyCar crash at Pocono in the United States. He was 37.

The British driver suffered serious head injury after American racer Sage Karam's car spun and crashed in front of him on lap 179 of 200, the BBC reported.

Wilson was immediately airlifted to hospital after he was struck by flying debris from Karam's car. However, he died on Monday afternoon.

Wilson made his F1 debut with Minardi before switching to Jaguar midway during the 2003 Formula 1 season. He scored his only career point at that year's United States Grand Prix.

The seven-time IndyCar winner was making his 174th appearance in the US open-wheel racing competition in Sunday's race.
