Former France international David Ginola has said that he would stand up against Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency, although it is not certain if he would actually be able to carry through his intention.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder needs the support of five football associations and must show active involvement in football for two of the past five years to be eligible for standing up for the world football governing body's presidency.

Ginola, who served as an ambassador for England's failed bid to host the 2018 World Cup, is being backed by a betting firm with whom he has arranged a news conference in London on Friday, the BBC reported.

A spokeswoman for Ginola said that they would be looking for the full support of UEFA and five football associations.

Nominations for the presidency of world football's governing body close on 29 January, with Blatter, who has been FIFA president since 1998, seeking a fifth term in office.

FIFA vice-president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and former diplomat Jerome Champagne, who joined the governing body in 1999, are the other candidates to announce that they would stand for the presidency, the report added.
