Former Maldives president Mohammad Nasheed has reportedly revealed that he fears for his life after he received a death threat from Islamist extremists while visiting Conservative Party convention in Britain last week.

In a statement released by his office on Sunday, the leader, who was toppled in a coup led by Islamist radicals in February 2012, said that the threat was "one of a line of threats from Islamist extremists," reported Gulf News.

It said that the telephone threat came after an attack on the headquarters of his Maldivian Democratic Party as well as his home in the Maldivian capital island of Male.

The statement also accused Maldivian police of failing to crack down on religious extremists.
