Exhibition on 'Banarasi sarees' to promote Indian weaving craft

In an endeavour to promote the Indian weaving craft and to showcase sarees, dress materials and accessories from one of the rich weaving craft centres of India, Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India Ltd., the Ministry of Textiles, is organising an exhibition cum sale of exclusive handwoven 'banarasi sarees' from June 17 to 26.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by Alok Kumar, Development Commissioner (Handlooms) in the Ministry of Textiles, at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Banaras is one of the rich weaving craft centre of India, famous for Brocade sarees and dress materials.

Banarasi saree is one of the most beautiful Indian saree made in Banaras now known as Varanasi. Sarees from Banaras are specially known for heavy work of gold and silver brocade or zari and embroidery.

 

Banarasi sarees are not only a traditional attire, but a symbol of pride, and a must in trousseau collection. Exclusive varieties of the saris are Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue and Butidar which are made of silk warp and silk weft, on plain/satian ground base, brocaded with extra weft patterns in different layouts introducing butis, bells, creepers, buttas in ground, border and anchal for getting attractive and stylish appearance.

The exhibition will showcase Banarasi sarees in cottons, silk cutwork, kadua buti, jangla buti, organza jaal, georgette, tanchoi, brocade, shikargarh, kota with zari border buta, silk dress material, ready to wear for men, women and children, accessories and made ups.

Also a special promotional discount of 15 percent is offered on purchase of Banarasi sarees during the exhibition.

This exhibition is yet another step in the series of special displays being organised by CCIC to encourage the weavers and artisans and present their creations to the discerning buyers from all parts of the globe.
