Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that a fair solution on Teesta river could be reached, adding that rivers should nurture relationship and not become a source of discord.

"I am confident that with the support of state governments in India, we can reach a fair solution on Teesta and Feni Rivers. We should also work together to renew and clean our rivers," he said in the joint press briefing with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"Our rivers should nurture our relationship, not become a source of discord. Water sharing is, above all, a human issue. It affects life and livelihood on both sides of the border," he added.

The dispute over the Teesta waters is on for the past 18 years.

The Teesta deal was set to be inked during the then prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's visit to Bangladesh in 2011 but was postponed at the eleventh hour due to objections by Mamata Banerjee, who had dropped out of the prime ministerial delegation.
