The fishermen in Tamil Nadu and their families began a hunger strike from today, urging the release of five Tamil fishermen from Sri Lankan custody.

The Tamil fishermen were given death sentence by a Sri Lankan Court for alleged drug smuggling.

Meanwhile, the indefinite strike by the fishermens' associations of five coastal districts, including Rameswaram, entered its fifth day today.

The strike has affected the livelihood of local fishermen, who urged the Centre to take legal and diplomatic steps to ensure the release of five fishermen languishing in Sri Lankan jail since 2011.
