Friends and supporters of the jailed Pakistani doctor who is credited with having helped the United States find Osama bin Laden have revealed that the doctor's wife and children are living in hiding due to increasing fear for their lives and said that they should be immediately evacuated from Pakistan.
According to Fox News, Shakeel Afridi, aged 51, is considered a traitor in Pakistan while a hero in the U.S. after the May 2011 SEAL Team 6 raid that killed al Qaeda leader Bin Laden.
Afridi has since remained in isolation in a jail in Pakistan for a review of his 2012 conviction for "terrorism links" has been stalled since last March.
Afridi's wife along with her two sons and a daughter are in hiding and fear that they will become targets of militant groups like Taliban.
The doctor's lawyer said that the U.S. government was not doing anything to protect him.
Afridi was arrested in a raid at a roadside checkpoint three weeks after the Pakistani intelligence launched an all-encompassing investigation in the wake of the Navy SEAL.
