Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Wednesday stated that the farmer Gajendra's body has been handed over to his family after conducting the post mortem.

"The post mortem has finished, the body has been handed over to the farmer's family," said Bassi.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said the case was being transferred to the crime branch.

"An FIR is being registered. The case will be transferred to the crime branch. A committee is being formed under the direct supervision of ACP to look into it," he added.

Earlier in the day, Gajendra, who hails from Rajasthan's Dausa district, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at the Aam Aadmi Party's rally in Jantar Mantar.

As per reports, a suicide note was found that revealed the farmer, who had three children, was banished from his house after his crop was damaged. He took the extreme step because he had no means of support his family.

The incident also sparked criticism for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, with opposition parties condemning that the rally went on despite the grave incident.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the incident, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said she would do whatever is needed for the welfare of the farming community.
