Australian all-rounder James Faulkner has set himself a target to return from knee surgery and be back to his best by March for the Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh.

Faulkner had minor surgery on his right knee on Tuesday and hopes to reunite with the Australian squad for the end of the South African tour.

Australia is due to play three T20 matches against the Proteas in early March, before heading off for the month-long tournament in Bangladesh, news.com.au reports.

Faulkner said his knee began to trouble him during the opening match of the five-game ODI series, played at the MCG on January 12.

The 23-year-old Tasmanian was in career-best form during the one-day series, despite having only just overcome a broken thumb sustained while batting in the WACA nets with the Test team in December.
