World number three and defending champion Roger Federer crashed out of the Shanghai Masters after suffering a second round defeat at the hands of Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Tuesday.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, who returned to action after three weeks, was beaten 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 by his Spanish opponent in a contest that lasted over two hours.
Although Federer staged a strong comeback to secure the second set, the Swiss looked rusty throughout the match as he succumbed in the decider against the 70th-ranked qualifier, Sport24 reported.
Ramos-Vinolas will next face either France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Victor Estrella Burgos in the third round.
