World number three Roger Federer reached the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open after defeating Belgium's David Goffin in straight sets in Halle, Germany on Friday.

The eight-time champion claimed a 6-1, 7-6 (12/10) win over Goffin in the quarterfinals and will next face Alexander Zverev for a place in the final, Sport24 reported.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion, who underwent a knee surgery in February, is yet to win a title this year. He was also forced to miss the French Open due to a back injury.

The Gerry Weber Open is a tune-up event for Wimbledon, where Federer will be aiming to win his eighth title when the third Grand Slam tournament of the season starts on June 27.
