World number two Roger Federer battled past big-hitting American John Isner to advance to the US Open quarter-finals at the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion overcame 13th seed Isner 7-6, 7-6, 7-5 in a contest that lasted two hours and 39 minutes.
Federer, the five-time US Open winner, will next face Richard Gasquet in the quarters.
Meanwhile, South African big-serving Kevin Anderson dumped third seed Andy Murray in the fourth round to set up a quarter-final showdown against Stanislas Wawrinka.
