Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer produced a rich vein of form as he swept aside Germany's Mischa Zverev in straight sets to book his place in the semi-finals of the season-opening Australian Open here at Melbourne Park on Tuesday.

The Swiss maestro, who was out of action for six months due to a knee injury, ended the dream run of Andy Murray's conqueror, Zverev by registering a 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 win over him in the last-eight clash that lasted one and a half hour on Rod Laver Arena.

With the win, Federer reached his 41st Grand Slam championship semi-final and his 13th at the Australian Open.

Four-time former champion Federer has now set up a blockbuster men singles' last-four clash against 2014 titlist and fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka.

The 35-year-old leads fourth-seed Wawrinka 18-3 in their FedEx ATP Head-to-Head series.
