17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer's hopes of ending his four-year major title drought were dented after he suffered a five-set defeat at the hands of Milos Raonic of Canada in the men's singles event here today.
Federer was beaten 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 5-7, 3-6 by his Canadian opponent in the nerve-wracking contest that lasted three hours and 25 minutes.
Although the Swiss maestro staged a strong comeback from the first set defeat, he failed to capitalize on it and went on to lose the decider against sixth-seed Roanic.
With the win, Roanic has now stormed into his first finals of the career. He will next face either second-seed Andy Murray or Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic for the prestigious title.
