Rio Ferdinand has backed his former team-mate Ryan Giggs to succeed Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager, saying it is a 'natural progression' for the assistant.

Ferdinand, who spent 12 years at United, said that it is quite visible that Giggs loves the game and is well-equipped to manage the post, the Daily Express reported.

The 36-year-old asserted that Giggs is familiar with the work as he used to be in and around the coaching staff during David Moyes' tenure.

Earlier, Van Gaal had also said that his assistant would succeed him at Old Trafford when the former steps down from the post in 2017.

Giggs, who retired last year after serving United for four season, had taken charge as a temporary United manager after Moyes was sacked in 2014.
