Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, who is known for his love of luxuries wine, has reportedly sold a load of vintage wine for 2.3 million pounds.

Ferguson, who managed United from 1986-2013, sold off a large part of his wine collection in Hong Kong, selling 229 lots out of the 257 offered lots.

According to the Daily Star, one Methuselah bottle that is equivalent to eight bottles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Vintage 1997 fetched Ferguson 94,815 pounds and this lot included a card signed 'Best Wishes Alex Ferguson'.

Ferguson said that his interest in wine began during a scouting trip in France and over time, his enjoyment of discovery and collecting grew.

The former United boss said that the importance of collecting wine was that it served as a distraction and gave him a balance in his life that helped him in dealing with the intensity and demands required of him while managing the club.

Ferguson added that in retirement, he now has the time to visit the places and people who would feed his passion, so he felt that it made sense to release a large number of the wines he had collected over the years.

The top ten lots were bought by private Asian buyers, Christie's said, with the second lot in the top ten consisting of six bottles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Romanee Conti Vintage 1999, which went for 85,334 pounds, the report added.

Further sales will take place in London on June 5 and online from June 9 to 23, the report further added.
