Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has insisted that striker Wayne Rooney did ask him if he could leave the club at the end of last season, despite the player's claims to the contrary.

According to the Mirror, Ferguson claimed that it was common knowledge Rooney had asked to leave the club, saying he had 'asked away' after Manchester United won the title last season.

However, he also expressed that their relationship is repaired, and that the whole debacle may have been a positive for Manchester United and for Wayne Rooney, the report said.

Ferguson has ruled out ever returning to football as a manager, and has implored fans not to waste their money at the betting shops by backing him to return, the report added.
