Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has revealed that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich once used an agent to approach him for the manager job when the billionaire first took over the club, and he said no straight away.

According to the Daily Star, United's chief executive Peter Kenyon, however, did make the switch despite claiming to be a lifelong United fan.

Ferguson also insisted that Wayne Rooney did ask to leave United last season, the report said.

Rooney had been linked with a move to Chelsea and Arsenal over the summer but ended up staying put, the report added.
