FIFA fever grips India's northeast

Keeping in mind the FIFA World Cup 2014, special arrangements for screenings of the matches have been made in cities, whereas in rural areas, kids are out with the soccer ball exhibiting their love for the sport.

Youngsters in Guwahati city are singing and playing football, as the FIFA World Cup kicked off in Brazil on June 12.

The sport is popular in every nook and corner of the Northeast. Be it young or old - everyone is crazy to support their favourite team.

"These days, there is a big craze for football club jerseys and country jerseys like Brazil, Argentina, Portugal etc," said Abdul Latif, a former international footballer from Assam.

 

Though India has no representation in international football, but many are rooting for their favorite international players.

For these children, Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard and Neymar are their favorite soccer players to watch at the FIFA World Cup.

"I have tried to do a Neymar haircut, because I like his skills. I am supporting Portugal in this World Cup," said Kamaleshwar Boro, a football lover.

Recently, Bollywood actor John Abraham, visited Shillong and launched the Guwahati franchise of Indian Super League. The team is named as 'North East United Football Club.

"I am very proud to represent the north east, and I can proudly say that I am the ambassador of football in the north east. Through this, I hope we can show what the north eastis exactly in the rest of India and the talent of the youngsters," said John Abraham.

Likewise, in a city like Imphal, people have been rushing to buy new television sets to watch the FIFA World Cup.

Seventy percent of the Northeastern players make up the Under-19 Indian team that speaks the volume of the football talent in the region.

Many of them dream to take Indian soccer team to the World Cup.
