The FIFA Ethics Committee has warned and fined German football legend Franz Beckenbauer after he refused to cooperate with a probe into the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Beckenbauer, who was also a member of the FIFA executive committee for the December 2010 vote that chose Russia and Qatar as World Cup hosts, was fined 7,050 dollars for his non-cooperation.
The committee said that the 70-year-old did not cooperate despite being requested repeatedly for his assistance, Sport24 reported.
Earlier, the FIFA Ethics Committee had opened an investigation against Beckenbauer over alleged charges of misconduct during the bidding process for the 2006 World Cup .
The scandal was pertaining to a hefty payment of 7.2 million dollars made by Germany Football Association in order to purchase the votes of the FIFA's executive committee to win the rights to host the 2006 World Cup.
