Finally, a passport for Kashmiri teen Sufaira Jan

The 15-year-old girl was earlier denied a passport just because her uncle was a militant. He had surrendered, two years before she was born.

According to reports, the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Investigation Department (CID) has now cleared the passport verification of Sufaira Jan.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah yesterday assured that Sufaira Jan will not be denied the passport

"Needless to say she will NOT be denied a passport because of her uncle's past. All such pending cases of previous denials are being cleared. I have asked CID to look into the passport case of Sufaira. Will revert with the facts once I have them," he tweeted. .

 

According to television reports, Sufaira was handed over her passport last evening.

Sufaira Jan , who stays in an orphanage in Budgam, had won a one-year scholarship under the India-US Youth Exchange Study programme but was unable to proceed to the United States as she was denied a passport on the ground that her uncle was a former militant.
