Australian cricket star, Aaron Finch, is set to take over the reins of the national Twenty20 team after George Bailey announced his decision to step down from the post.

Bailey said that he wanted to focus on longer-form cricket and hoped to play at the Test level again. He added that he has made the decision after consulting the selectors, reported Stuff.co.nz.

The 32-year-old will now not be available for selection in Australia's T20 matches on the upcoming tour of the UAE and Australia's three T20s against South Africa in November.

The Tasmanian cricketer said that the task of leading a team in the T20 format is "a thankless task," because internationals are often tacked onto the end of tours with little structure.

Bailey however, did not rule out the possibility of playing in the 2016 tournament if his form is good enough.

Selectors are likely to announce Bailey's successor at the same time when the Test, ODI and T20 squads for October's tour of the UAE are announced on Monday.

The cricketer has captained the Australian team 28 times in T20 internationals and has led the team to 14 victories. He will remain Australia's one-day vice-captain.
